WHAT HAPPENED IN BANGLADESH?

'The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any'

24th April, Fashion Revolution Day, is a special day for every fashion enthusiast. However, 2020 began on a rough start and everyone is wondering how to contribute to the Fashion revolution week 2020. But first, what is the Fashion revolution week all about? More importantly, how do we contribute to the Fashion revolution 2020 during this COVID-19 Pandemic?

The Fashion Revolution Day was first founded back in 2013 which was a response to the events that happened during the Rana Plaza Disaster. More than a thousand people died in Bangladesh. The collapse has revealed the unacceptable working conditions of the whole fashion industry to the world.

Orsola de Castro and Carry Somers, the founders, created this event to ensure transparency in the fashion industry. During this day, every organizer is encouraged to ask their favorite clothing brand, ‘Who Made My Clothes?’ And, that’s how the ‘WhoMadeMyClothes’ hashtag was born.

Fast forward to today, a revolution that had a simple objective has grown to be one of the largest activism events in the whole world. The goal of this revolution is to ensure transparency in the fashion industry and also reveal some of the deplorable conditions in the favorite clothes that we wear. Though this event typically occurs on 26th, it’s still a whole week experience hence the name, ‘Fashion Revolution Week 2020’. Fashion Revolution 2020 will focus on four key areas: Consumption, Composition, Conditions, and Collective Action.

How to participate in the Fashion Revolution Week?

Most organizers will encourage social media participation and grassroots involvement. In fact, one of the main ways to get yourself involved in this event is by using the hashtag #WhoMadeMyClothes. The group recommends that you take a photo of your clothing brand, tag the brand, and post it on social media with the tag #WhoMadeMyClothes? You will have to share your photo on social media such as Facebook and Instagram and let your friends join in the challenge as well. Another way to participate is to host a clothes swap event once it’s safe to do so, and/or join Fashion Open Studio, to meet the teams behind the clothes. Designers invite people from all over the world to digitally follow a day of innovation, customization and discussion, all from your couch. This includes conferences, exhibitions, workshops, and even online public demonstrations!

Will the current pandemic affect the Fashion Revolution Week 2020?

Of course, yes. Most fashion companies had anticipated a good year which resulted in overproduction to cater to demands preceding this crisis. However, fashion retailers have had to close shop to reduce the spread of COVID-19 while encouraging customers to shop online. But as much as our customers would like to shop for their favorite outfits from the comfort of their homes, they are also facing challenges such as unpaid leaves and childcare responsibilities. That makes it impossible to shop for new clothes leading to a profit reduction in the fashion industry.

Regardless all hope is not lost. We need to stand together and be positive that humankind will be victorious as we’ve always been. On that note, as much as grassroots participation may be affected due to the social distancing rule, we can still participate in this revolutionary event by using the hashtag, ‘WhoMadeMyClothes’.

Take your favorite cloth and post it online. Also, encourage your friends and family to do the same. This will help create the much-needed awareness to drive our fashion revolution week 2020 in the right direction.
