PLANTING TREES ACROSS NATIONS

Date

‘A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people’

Between 2010 and 2019, some estimates state that deforestation has increased 30% over the last decade. In 2015 global forest coverage fell to its lowest point in history – less than 4 billion hectares (just 4x the area of the United States). With 2019 finishing off with some of the worst wildfires in history taking place in Australia, the world is waking up to the reality of climate change and the impact it is having our forests, our wildlife, and our plant.

We care deeply about the planet and creating a business that gives back to nature. That’s why we’re thrilled to share that we’re partnering with One Tree Planted to plant a tree for every order. The partnership is designed to be simple for customers to get involved in global reforestation. For every order, Unified Nature will donate to One Tree Planted to plant one tree. The trees are planted by local partner organizations and community volunteers in areas where there has been deforestation. One Tree Planted has planting projects in four global regions: North America, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Within these regions, in 2019 they had projects in 17 different countries.

Trees help clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, and provide habitat to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. Trees capture rainwater and reduce the risk of natural disasters; their intricate root systems remove pollutants and slow down the water’s absorption into the ground. This process prevents harmful waterside erosion and reduces the risk of over-saturation and flooding. According to the Food and Agriculture Association of the United Nations, a mature evergreen tree can intercept more than 15,000 litres of water every year. Moreover, a single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insect, fungi, moss, mammals, and plants. Depending on the kind of food and shelter they need, different forest animals require different types of habitat. Without trees, forest creatures would have nowhere to call home.

In addition, forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines. Through their leaves and bark, they absorb harmful pollutants and release clean oxygen for us to breathe. In urban environments, trees absorb pollutant gases like nitrogen oxides, ozone, and carbon monoxide, and sweep up particles like dust and smoke. Healthy, strong trees act as carbon sinks; absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide and reducing the effects of climate change. A mature tree can absorb an average of 48 lbs of carbon dioxide per year. Covering human health, trees help reduce stress, anxiety, and allow us to reconnect with nature. Besides, shade provided by tree coverage helps protect our skin from the ever-increasing harshness of the sun.

In 2019, the organization planted over 4 million trees – more than 1.8 million in North America, 1.2 million in Africa, 465,000 in Asia, and 423,000 in Latin America! Even more exciting, One Tree Planted has been honoured by 1% for the Planet as part of their People for the Planet Awards, and WON the category of Nonprofit Changemaker!
